DAVE CAHALAN

RECREATIONAL BOAT OWNER – BELLINGHAM, WASHINGTON

Thanks so much for the Solas 3.8 you built for me. It has been the perfect skiff for towing behind our Bill Garden 1960 troller, CHINOOK, on trips in the San Juan and Gulf Islands, to Desolation Sound and points farther north. The tough little vessel has been ideal for ferrying Mary, Cassius and me, as well as our gear and supplies to and from shore. She has been a safe, speedy and comfortable boat for day excursions for exploring.

The aluminum hull performed with hardly a scratch when landing on rocks. The double layer inflatable collar has withstood the sharpest shells when beaching on old oyster beds in Desolation Sound.

I equip my vessel with systems that are uncomplicated, practical, and safe when cruising far from home. Our SOLAS is the epitome of that description.

When recently stopped and boarded by a Homeland Security 40 foot high HP craft on a rough Bellingham Bay evening, their question was “what am I doing out here in such conditions?” … my only thought on looking up to their gunwale and several heavily armed officers ready for action, was …. “we are just as tough as you are”! They looked at all 12 foot 6 inches of my boat … and left.

Alan and his team have been a pleasure to work with during the construction, sea trials, and later modifications of our SOLAS. Always reachable and Alan is quick to respond with help on any kind with our SOLAS. I will continue to enthusiastically recommend Alan to fellow boaters who ask admiring questions about our SOLAS.
